While more people are familiar with writer’s block, photographer’s block is something that is as equally important as a writer’s block. In fact, all creative endeavors face or suffer blockages from time to time. This is because we are too creative to handle ta times! LOL! But jokes, apart, it can really be an issue, especially if you are constantly working without a break. When we say block, it is really a block, as fresh ideas stop coming and our mind is just blank. This can have negative impacts on your creative projects and can also hamper your work. In this post, we have consulted many professional photographers to come up with 11 creative photography tips that will help you remove photographer’s block.
1. Hang out with Other Photographers
Chances are that, if you’ve got photographer’s block, not every photographer who you know has it at the same time. So hanging out with them will not only refresh your mind, but you will get a break from work. The best is to meet them over a cup of coffee or just go for a photo walk with your photography friends. This will trigger some creative particle of your brain and you will soon start receiving new ideas.
2. Put Relaxing Activities on Your Schedule.
Now, here is the myth that schedules are meant to keep you down. It is not that you had to live a life like Jim Morrison from the Doors to find creative inspiration. But including relaxing activities in your schedule like taking a walk in nature, sipping some stress relieving tea, going for a jog can revitalize your mind and body. It is not like a 9 to 5 schedule, but a one that breaks free from your so-called daily life activities.
3. Overcome Photographer’s Block with Meditation
This blog ain’t spiritual, but do not underestimate the power of meditation. Professional photographer Chase Jarvis swears by meditation for 20 minutes every day. He says, “I practice Transcendental Meditation (TM), but I’m not recommending a particular kind in this post here… I’m just saying that meditation works. It’s made the single biggest difference in my life’s ability to perform at a high level and run the kind of gnarly schedule that I run. What’s the effect? Clarity. My ideas are clearer than ever before. You’ve heard athletes like Michael Jordan talk about seeing the game around them develop seemingly in slow motion? Well that’s what happens to the chaos of a packed life when one meditates. This are infinitely more manageable, things are less prone to get me off my game — and … here’s the kicker… my creative thoughts come more freely. I find it 100x easier to get into that creative “flow state” I’ve talked about before and that science backs me on…”
4. Battle Creative Block with Sport
Sport and exercise is a way to get your blood circulations up and running. Regular exercise even if it is for 7-10 minutes is good for the body. Exercise and sport has huge ability to contribute being active. There are even studies that say that exercise improve your cognitive ability. The healthier and stronger your body, the stronger is your creative thinking power.
5. Get at least 6 hours of sleep
The best of all photography tips is sleep. Sleep is essential for all creative activities. Although there are many who function like a super human getting only 4 hours of sleep, 6-8 hours are the minimum requirement for a body to function well. Trust us, sleep is like a wonder drug. Even if you sleep for the whole day, you will wake up without the block, the next day. There are many photographers who we converse with. They often sleep for 10 hours a day after a project, just to freshen up.
